Oops! 5 Things You’re Forgetting but Need to Clean

February 15, 2015

Cleaning the kitchen is a given. Scrubbing toilets is a frequent pastime. Wiping floors and countertops is a foregone conclusion. But how often do you remember to clean those other items in your life that you use daily? Here are 5 items that need your cleaning attention stat!

1.) Winter Wardrobe Staples

Gloves, scarves and winter jackets all need to be cleaned just like other clothing items. Using these items on a regular basis allows them to accumulate dirt, dead skin and all sorts of bad bacteria. Also, pets can harbor pathogens, which can find their way onto clothing outerwear. It’s important to launder winter garments and wipe leather gloves and jackets with cleansing cloths.

2.) Grimy Gym Bags

Frequently toted to a place where floors are covered in sweat, workout bags are the perfect place for nasty microbes to find a home. Sweat covered clothing and dirty socks are transported along with sweaty headsets and tennis shoes. If your go-to gym tote is machine washable, throw that sucker in the washing machine for a mean clean. If the bag is not laundry-friendly, wipe it down with disinfecting cloths and sprinkle in some baking soda to absorb odors.

3.) Brooms and Mops

Cleaning tools need to be scrub a dub dubbed just as much as any other item. Dust, dirt and even spider webs can find a happy home inside the broom bristles. It’s important to regularly vacuum a broom and run it under warm water or better yet, soak in a bath of bleach, soap and water. A mop can be soaked in warm, soapy water, while a string mop can be thrown in the washing machine on delicate.

4.) Electronic Devices

A TV remote can be one of the most dirt-laden items in a house. And cellphones are oftentimes the most crud crusted in all the land. Cleaning electronics is easy with alcohol wipes or microfiber cleansing pads. For remotes, try a regular swipe and wipe with disinfecting cleansing cloths.

5.) Makeup Brushes

Almost every woman owns some cosmetic product or beautifying foundation, mascara or blush. Moreover, women apply their cosmetics with makeup brushes that are bountiful bacteria keepers. For cleaning these tools, wash them with shampoo until the water runs clear or try special makeup brush cleaners that are often comprised of alcohol or other bacteria busting ingredients.

How to Make a Small Place Look Bigger

January 27, 2015

Whether you’re moving into a small home or you’ve been living in a small space for a while, there are many quick and easy ideas for making your cozy space feel homey and huge. If you feel cramped or cornered in your current living arrangement, there’s a plethora of design ideas and inspiration for turning your mini-home into a major crib.

Toss Today
Most people have too much stuff; too many children’s toys, too many books and too many kitchen accessories, trinkets and clothes. The first step to making a space feel large and in charge is to clear the clutter by donating dated goods or storing precious items.

High Five
Even the tiniest spaces have vertical room, which can be utilized with the right furniture. High reaching furniture serves double-duty by making a space feel less crowded but also creates more available room for storage. Try and find the right modular shelving units, bookcases and tall multi-door cabinets to store and house keepsakes and housewares.

Mirror, Mirror
Many design tricks will save a small space from feeling oompa loompa friendly. Try a large art painting on the wall to make a space feel richer and heartier, place mirrors strategically to visually trick the eye and use wallpaper on the paint or ceiling to create the illusion of more depth and height.

Uptown Funk
When devising the design and décor elements for a living area, the best strategy is to use multi-purpose items, which clear clutter and close off a space. Try a coffee table that doubles as a desk or an open ottoman, which hides, blankets, books and toys.

Mean Clean
Nothing makes a home feel more organized and larger than when all the gunk and grime is gone. Do a serious clean or hire the professionals like here at Solano Maids! We specialize in taking a messy home from sad to stunning!

Smile Challenge

November 12, 2014

I challenge you to smile…everyday.

I believe that as a people we walk around with so many things heavy on our minds that we forget to smile. I make it a practice, especially in the mornings when I’m not feeling my best and alert, to greet everyone with a smile that I can to make eye contact with. You never know the impact that will have on someone. In my own experience, as a teenager attending Berkley High School, I was walking down Shattuck Avenue, mind full of thought, but staring at the ground as I walked. I heard a voice say, “Hey young lady, always hold your head up.” I looked up to see a very elderly man sitting at the bus bench. When our eyes met, he had the biggest smile on his face. I held my head up and walked away with a smile big enough to hold the world. To this day, I know exactly what that gentleman looked like. I wish I could tell him thank you. His smile and his uplifting words changed something in me that day. Never again have I walked with my head down and I always smile at strangers.

Enjoy your day and don’t forget, I challenge you to smile.  🙂

What’s a Busy Mom to Do?

January 31, 2010

It’s six o’clock in the morning.  You hit the snooze button for the last time.  No time left to catch a few more zzz’s.  It’s time to plant those feet on the floor.  Hair needs to be combed, clothes need ironing and breakfast needs to be cooked.

You enter the children’s room and see three pairs of sleepy little eyes staring out at you from under their warm blankets begging for “just a few more minutes.”  Before you can even respond your husband comes running in to ask, “Honey, which tie should I wear?”  With barely the time to brush your own teeth, you are headed out the door to drop off the kids, commute to work or start the days errands.  Thus begins the morning for most of the nations busy moms’.

If you are a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM) you don’t have the leisure time that some people may expect you to have.  If you’re a work-at-home-mom (WAHM) or a mom who works outside of the home, your time is equally limited. Having been all three of the above, I sincerely understand the issues that face you all.

Our spouses like to have dinner ready when they arrive home from work, the house needs cleaning, dishes have to be washed, and laundry has to be done.  Some families may employ a live-in housekeeper or nanny to assist them with the domestic duties of the household.  Others, when budgets are tight, seek a more economical means of getting these things done while still allowing time for self and family.

May I suggest you take a  look at www.flylady.net?  This website offers helpful tips on getting organized including, How to Clean Your Home in 19 Minutes.  Not only is the site informative…the site owner has a great sense of humor!

Who’s Cleaning Your House?

January 8, 2010

The state of the economy has forced everyone to keep a close watch on their wallets. Yet, people still have the need for certain services that are considered “luxuries.” House cleaning is one of these services.

As unemployment rates continue to skyrocket and the number of people out of work increases, ads for house cleaning are being posted daily on boards such as Craig’s List.

Below are some things to consider when you are selecting a cleaning service, whether it’s an individual, an independent company or a franchise.

There are many cleaning services that will hire cleaners and not take into account the persons background, check their references,  search for a past criminal history, or identify current drug use.

If your cleaning service’s employees are cleaning while you are not home, your keys are provided to the cleaning team as well as alarm codes and other personal information. Therefore it is important that the cleaning service you use has thorough hiring practices in place.

Do they conduct reference as well as criminal background checks? Not the type of background checks you can run for free on the internet. Are they using a reputable company that can perform the thoroughness that is needed? Ask them.

Drug screening? Does your cleaning company perform pre-employment as well as random drug screening of their employees. Ask them.

Is your cleaning company licensed and insured? Ask them.

Do they cover their employees with workers compensation insurance? Ask them. Homeowners must understand that they put themselves at risk when their cleaning service does not carry this insurance. If a cleaner is injured at your home, you can be sued!

All these items are REQUIRED by the State of California. Cleaning companies are required to pay employment taxes on wages and should not pay their employees under the table. Ask them.

Don’t be afraid to ask for proof of insurance, references from past clients, as well as be present for the first cleaning so that you will know who is in your home.

Take the time out to investigate who’s cleaning your home…you may be surprised.
